We might have come across people around the globe who have dogs as their pets, and why wouldn’t they? After all, they’re the ones who make us go out of our usual gloomy moods. Mainly, Shih Poo is the most versatile creature that can adapt to any environment with ease.

The following informative article emphasizes what Shih-Poo is and how these darlings are the best choices for us.

What is a Shih Poo?

Shih Poo is a mixed breed dog that originated in North America. Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle give rise to this enchanting piece of soul, which often goes by the name Shih Tzu poodle mix if it makes sense.

Unlike Shih Poo, Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle are completely pure-bred animals with entirely different origins. Toy Poodle hails from Germany, whereas Shih Tzu is a Chinese breed.

Facts about this Shih Tzu Poodle mix

  • It’s a mixed breed with Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle as Parents.
  • Their coats can be curly or straight or can have assorted features of both
  • They’re hypoallergenic
  • They come in various color combinations.
  • The owner must maintain their dental hygiene.
  • They’re pretty much adaptable to changing environments
  • They’re great companions and love to stay beside their owners
  • They also have a moderate activity level

Is the Shih Poo/ Shih Tzu hypoallergenic?’

One might wonder whether it is a good option for allergic people to keep pets, specifically dogs? Well, it’s a tricky one to answer.

Shih Tzu is among those few breeds with hair instead of fur as their coat, but that doesn’t give away that they don’t shed.

They indeed do kind of shrug their hair off but what makes them hypoallergenic is that their shedding hair doesn’t fall on the ground—instead, the shed hair falls on the coat itself, and grooming is gets rid of that hair. So, you won’t have to worry about cleaning your couch up, and your cutie won’t have to worry about your tantrums.

As far as their grooming is concerned, daily brushings can be made a habit and probably weekly baths. However, too many baths can make their coat dry and annoying for them.

Shih Poo appearance and size

Considering that they’re relatively a new breed, they might vary in height and weight. Shih Poos range anywhere between 8- 13 inches tall and 8-18 pounds in weight.

Shih Poo’s appearance is, however, not the same. Their coats might be curly and hypoallergenic like the Poodle, or they might be straight up long like Shih Tzu. They may as well look like one of their parents or can be a perfect hybrid of both. They also do come in all sorts of black, white, or tawny color combinations

Shih Poo temperament and personality

Shih Poos are playful and spirited creatures. Their zest while playing any game with their owners can be evident with their hyperactive jumps and cheerful aura.

They’re loving and cuddly dogs who do expect to sleep with their owners at times. They aren’t barky or loud like many other dogs, making them peaceful and serene animals. They can hang around with kids, teens, adults, and even with older people.

Unlike Toy Poodles that used to be hunting and gun dogs, this mixed breed virtually has no prey drive in them. Rest assured, they’re good to go, dogs.

This breed can have some separation issues, so make sure you teach them how to be alone. Make sure your new Shih Poo doesn’t develop separation anxiety.

Are Shih Poo puppies easy to train?

As cheerful as they may sound, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea because this is where things get a bit hard. These puppies want to be on their own, doing things on their terms, which might sound cute but, at times, do become annoying.

They’re stubborn puppies and won’t be willing to know how to behave and learn some tricks. But it’s not the end of the world. They do come around if their training is done in bits, not to wear them out. But they are also keeping it steady and regular for them not to lose interest.

If you get a Shih Poo make sure you start training them early and keep the training light and interesting so they don’t loose interest. We would advice to do and online dog training course, to get you Shih Poo to be the best behaving dog as possible.

They are smart dogs, so teach them smart tricks!
